A Nigerian raised in California, Ibilola graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, with a BSFS in Culture and Politics and a minor in African Studies. Passionate about the continent, Ibilola has integrated her love for African affairs into her personal and professional life. During her junior year, she spent a semester abroad in Lomé, Togo, where she interned for the Political-Economic bureau at the US Embassy and led English conversation classes at the local university. On return, she interned for the US Chamber of Commerce’s Africa Business Center, as well as the State Department’s Africa Regional Media Hub. At Georgetown, she served as President of the African Society of Georgetown, and helped plan and conduct Georgetown’s second annual Africa Business Conference. She also wrote articles on business, democracy, and diplomacy in West Africa as a reporter for The Caravel, Georgetown’s only international affairs newspaper. Ibilola is excited about the opportunity to work with ASE in Benin, and looks forward to improving her French and learning more about Beninese life!

Fellow Bio:

Mike is a biology major with minors in anthropology and chemistry. Mike is originally from Minneapolis, MN and at Macalester he was a wide receiver on the football team, president of the Health Professions Student Coalition and a chemistry tutor. Through Macalester, Mike participated in summer research programs on campus and at the University of Minnesota and studied abroad in Gaborone, Botswana. In his free time, Mike volunteers at Regions Hospital and plays the saxophone. Next year in Botswana Mike looks forward to practicing the Setswana that he learned during study abroad, meeting new people and enjoying local food.

Elise is from Brookfield, VT and majored in International Politics with a concentration in International Security and a Certificate in African Studies while she attended Georgetown University. During her time at Georgetown, Elise had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris, France and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She loved both experiences, especially exploring new cultures and getting to use French and Swahili. In Tanzania, she interned for Chipua Institute for Social Transformation, and when she returned to the U.S. she worked at the Woodrow Wilson Center in their Africa Program and Project on Leadership and Building State Capacity. In her free time, Elise likes listening to music, hiking, laughing, learning new languages, and adventuring. She cannot wait for the opportunity to explore a new culture in Ethiopia, eat delicious food, learn Amharic, and meet amazing new people.

Dan graduated with a degree in Political Economy, and is originally from Dallas, TX. During his time at Georgetown, he studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, interned for an economic think tank and a sustainable development consulting firm, and led trips as an outdoor guide. Since graduating, Dan has worked in international development for two organizations including a recent position backstopping agricultural development projects around the world for a non-profit called CNFA. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, kayaking, playing and watching sports, and reading. While in Ghana next year, Dan looks forward to expanding on his agricultural development experience, learning some of the Akan language and exploring Ghana’s cultural and natural landmarks.  

Alumni Update:

In January Shameika moved out of the nonprofit world and started working as a Management Trainee at McMaster-Carr, a MRO supply company. She commutes from her home in Philadelphia to New Jersey. She focuses on learning how to support and develop people while maintaining high standards and increasing logistical efficiencies.

Fellow Bio:

Shameika is originally from Seattle, WA. At Swarthmore College, she majored in Africana Studies and spent a year abroad in Accra, Ghana. Since graduation, Shameika has worked at Philadelphia VIP, a nonprofit legal services agency, through the Philly Fellows program. In her free time Shameika enjoys learning languages, reading about the most recent developments in astro-physics, and kickboxing. While in Gabon next year, Shameika looks forward to learning French and Fang in addition to learning about Gabonaise culture.
