Our History

In 1999, a group of Princeton alumni, faculty, and staff launched Princeton in Africa as an independent affiliate of Princeton University inspired by the University's informal motto, "Princeton in the Nation's Service and in the Service of All Nations." Since our launch in 1999, we have had 545 Fellows in 36 countries. This year, 48 recent college graduates (from 31 colleges and universities) are working with 31 organizations in 13 African countries.

Theresa is two years into a PhD in Wildlife Biology at the University of Montana and wrapped up a pilot season in northwest Namibia this January. Her research focuses on desert food webs, specifically what drives bat diversity in the Namib Desert. Highlights from her pilot season are currently being featured in a National Geographic Society blog, http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/author/tlaverty/.

Fellow Bio:

Theresa ’10 is an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major at Princeton University. She originates from Ocean City, NJ, and has two younger sisters. At Princeton, Theresa was a member of the Women’s Rugby team, an Outdoor Action Leader, and a student manager in the Butler/Wilson dining hall. She spent a summer volunteering in a geriatric clinic in Cusco, Peru, with Awaiting Angels in 2007. Through Princeton, she studied abroad in Panama during the spring semester of 2009 and in Kenya for her senior spring semester of 2010. Theresa conducted her thesis research on crocodilian diets in the Peruvian Amazon during the summer of 2009. In Kenya next year, Theresa looks forward to picking up some Swahili and hopefully conducting more field research while learning more about the field work conducted in Mpala.
